Jallikattu (primarily known as Eruthazhuvudhal/Manjavirattu) is a famous event held in Tamilnadu as a part of the Pongal celebrations. It is in practice since Tamil classical period (400 – 100 B.C) but the roots go as early as the Indus civilization. Bulls are bred specifically for this event and the people from neighboring villages participate with their bulls. During the event, bull baiting happens when the participating youth try to embrace the bull and ride a distance. The winners are awarded and the winning bulls are hailed. The tamed weak bulls are used for domestic activities and agriculture; meanwhile the untamable strong bulls are used for breeding the cows. This basically is the scientific stand and the tradition behind Jallikattu and the current ban on the sport has raised havoc amongst the native community.
