Located at around 60 Km from Chennai, the Pulicat lake is an ideal weekend getaway from the city. Being the second largest brackish – water lake or lagoon in India measuring 759 kilometers, after Chilika Lake, this water body attracts various kinds of migratory birds.
Apart from the bird sanctuary housed here, one can see the Dutch influence of a bygone era in its dilapted fort, church ruins and a cemetery. The fort dates back to 1609 while the cemetery was structured in 1622. The huge mausoleums and graves inscribed by Dutch, carved with skeletons make for an interesting albeit eerie history lesson.
